Foundation Provides New Coats

This week the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools provided 372 coats, totaling $13,020 for students in need through its Coats for Kids program. The Coats for Kids program was established
thirteen years ago by an anonymous donor to provide funding for new winter coats for students in need in Springfield Public Schools.

The program consists of a voucher system in which school nurses identify students in need at each school. Vouchers are redeemable at several Wal-Mart locations in Springfield. This year the Foundation saw an increase in voucher requests. Each school that requested coats received vouchers. Because of the support of organizations like the Gate of the Temple Lodge 422 and Queen City Free Runners, who held a Rock and Ride fundraiser for the program in September, the number of vouchers awarded was increased by 68 percent this year.

“In order for our students to be successful at school, their basic needs must be met. Warmth is a basic need that many take for granted. Weller is blessed by The Foundation providing Coats for Kids vouchers to our students who need them so that they can come to school warm and ready to learn.” said Rachel Haynes, Weller Elementary nurse.

“We know that as colder weather approaches more requests will most likely come in from our school nurses. This is a collaborative effort and we are working with many other businesses and organizations to ensure that we try to meet every need. We are very grateful for the support of our community and for the generosity of those who have donated to the Coats for Kids fund,” said Jana Bachus, Foundation executive director.

The Springfield Public Schools Partners in Education Program, the Springfield Council of PTAs and the Foundation are hosting a winter coat drive to provide ongoing support for students in need. Gently used or new coats can be donated to the Council of PTA’s clothing bank and donations for the Coats for Kids program can be made to the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools.
