History of Celebrate SPS
Launched back in 1994, the event we now know as Celebrate SPS began as the Teacher Appreciation Banquet. It was founded on the vital understanding that a strong community and its dedicated educators thrive best when they come together in mutual support. Recognizing this need for connection, the initiative was spearheaded by David Harrison, who successfully united key community partners including the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Springfield Council of PTAs.
From the very beginning, the event’s core mission was to publicly acknowledge the unwavering dedication shown by educators through their commitment to our children and the betterment of our community. For more than three decades now, this cherished annual banquet has served as a vital expression of gratitude and appreciation. Its enduring presence highlights the crucial relationship between sustained community backing and the truly outstanding educators and staff whose exceptional work within the district makes this celebration both possible and necessary.
“In 1994, my aim was to organize a minimum of 13 yearly banquets,” David Harrison shared. “This was so that children beginning kindergarten that year would regularly hear about the respect their teachers receive throughout their school journey. I am immensely proud of all of you and grateful to be part of a community where numerous exceptional educators and staff dedicate themselves to our children. Your efforts are truly appreciated.”
The Celebrate SPS Banquet serves as a fundraiser for the Foundation for SPS in order to provide support for our programs and initiatives with Springfield Public Schools. At the banquet, we recognize community partners, educators and staff for their commitment to education in SPS.
Awards recognized at the banquet include:
- Turner Reading Awards
- Linda Luke Librarian of the Year
- Advocate for Education
- Corporate Partner of the Year
- Malori McGhee Rookie of the Year
- Counselor of the Year
- Teacher of the Year
By not charging SPS schools to attend this annual event, we demonstrate our appreciation for educators. To make this possible, we heavily rely on sponsorships to help fund our mission of enhancing public education initiatives. Your generosity plays a crucial role in ensuring the success and sustainability of our programs.
