In 2001, Dr. Leo T. Neu, started a permanent endowment fund with the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools to support students in need during the winter months, by providing funds for new coats, through the Coats for Kids fund.
Dr. Neu was inspired by an estate donation that provided winter garments for children. With the support of a few other generous Springfieldians, Dr. Neu started the Coats for Kids fund, working with school nurses across the city.
In the past 10 years nearly 3,000 coats have been provided to students from across the district. Through a voucher program with Foundation partner, Walmart, students in need can receive brand new coats each year. Students are identified through each schools nurses office with vouchers being provided in the month of October each year.
The Foundation for SPS manages many permanent endowment funds that provide long-term support to our schools and students.
