- Description:
Nine 6′ x 42′ cheerleading mats would create a large, continuous performance and practice surface designed to support safe tumbling, stunting, and full routines. Each mat measures 6 feet wide by 42 feet long, and when placed side by side, the nine mats form a combined area approximately 54 feet wide by 42 feet long—closely matching a standard competition floor.
These mats are typically constructed with high-density foam cores to absorb impact and reduce the risk of injury, covered in durable vinyl for longevity and easy cleaning. They are designed with strong hook-and-loop (Velcro) fasteners along the edges, allowing each section to securely connect to the next and prevent shifting during use. This creates a stable, uniform surface where athletes can safely perform skills without gaps or uneven footing.
- Need Represented: This project meets a critical need for student safety within the Westport K-8 cheerleading program. As athletes progress in skill level, they are performing more advanced tumbling and stunting that require a stable, impact-absorbing surface. Our current mats are worn and unreliable, with failing Velcro that causes them to shift during use—creating a significant safety hazard for both athletes and coaches.
By providing new, high-quality cheerleading mats, this project will directly reduce the risk of injury and create a secure environment where students can safely practice and perform. It will also address the need for adequate training space, allowing multiple athletes to work simultaneously without compromising safety or performance quality.
Beyond safety, this project supports the overall growth and sustainability of the program. With proper equipment, athletes can build confidence, improve technique, and better prepare for regional and Game Day competitions. Ultimately, this project ensures that all participants have access to a safe, supportive environment that promotes teamwork, skill development, and student well-being. - Academic Impact: This project will have a meaningful academic impact by supporting students’ overall engagement, focus, and success in school. Participation in cheerleading encourages discipline, time management, and goal-setting—skills that directly translate to improved academic performance. By providing a safe and reliable practice environment, students can train with confidence, reducing anxiety about injury and allowing them to stay physically active, focused, and present in the classroom.
Additionally, a well-supported extracurricular program increases student motivation and school connection. When students feel safe and supported in their activities, they are more likely to maintain consistent attendance, demonstrate positive behavior, and take pride in their school community. Cheerleading also promotes teamwork, communication, and leadership skills, all of which contribute to collaborative learning and academic growth.
By investing in proper equipment, this project helps ensure that students can continue participating in a structured, goal-oriented activity that reinforces perseverance and accountability—qualities that benefit them both on the mat and in their academic pursuits. - Student Population: This project will serve the student population of Westport K-8, supporting a diverse group of elementary and middle school students who participate in the growing cheerleading program. The team includes students from a wide range of grade levels, backgrounds, and experience levels—from beginners learning foundational skills to more advanced athletes performing complex tumbling and stunts.
Many of our participants rely on school-based extracurricular activities as their primary opportunity for physical activity, teamwork, and skill development. This project ensures that all students, regardless of experience or ability level, have access to a safe and supportive environment where they can build confidence, stay active, and feel connected to their school community.
As the program continues to expand, these mats will benefit not only current team members but also future students who choose to join. By improving safety and increasing usable practice space, this project helps create an inclusive environment where more students can participate, grow, and succeed both athletically and academically.
