417 Reads

417 Reads

  • Description:

417 Reads is a district-wide literacy initiative uniting Springfield Public Schools, local businesses, and community partners to inspire a love of reading and drive long-term academic achievement across the 417. To drive long-term student success, this campaign focuses on two immediate, high-impact goals:

    1. Recruiting 75 REAL Mentors to read to 3rd-grade classrooms once a month, providing positive mentorship and gifting students books to build their personal home libraries (aiming to reach 1,600 3rd graders).

    2. Raising $75,000 to Expand Classroom Libraries, equipping new SPS elementary teachers with up to 750 interest-aligned books and secondary teachers with subject-specific content libraries.

  • Need Represented: SPS students—particularly 3rd graders at a critical transition point from "learning to read" to "reading to learn"—need reliable access to diverse, interest-aligned books to build foundational literacy skills. Meanwhile, newly hired SPS teachers face the challenge of starting their careers without physical classroom libraries to support independent reading. This project fulfills the dual need for student-owned books and fully equipped teacher classrooms across the district.
  • Academic Impact: Supports independent reading, which is strongly linked to higher overall literacy achievement, stronger vocabulary acquisition, improved comprehension, enhanced background knowledge, and better student writing skills across the district.
  • Student Population: Springfield Public Schools elementary, middle, and high school students, with a direct impact on students in classrooms across the district.
