Weight Room Upgrade

Weight Room Upgrade

  • Description:

We started a weight room this year for our middle school. This allowed us to have a strength and conditioning class. We are trying to get more equipment for it so the students have an opportunity to learn new lifts and exercises. This project is focused on improving the weight room by purchasing power racks, weighted bumper plates, barbells, and clips. These items will provide students with safe, high-quality equipment to build strength, learn proper lifting techniques, and improve overall fitness. By upgrading our equipment, more students will have the opportunity to participate in strength training activities that support their health, confidence, and physical development.

  • Need Represented: This project will meet the need for safe, updated, and accessible strength training equipment for our students. Currently, our weight room has limited and worn equipment, which makes it difficult for all students to participate effectively and safely. By adding power racks, bumper plates, barbells, and clips, students will have the proper tools to learn correct lifting techniques, reduce the risk of injury, and build a strong fitness foundation. This project will help ensure all students have equal opportunities to improve their strength, confidence, and overall health.
  • Academic Impact: This project will have a direct impact on students by giving them access to safe, high-quality equipment that supports proper strength training. With the addition of power racks, bumper plates, barbells, and clips, students will be able to learn correct lifting techniques, build strength, and improve their overall fitness in a safe environment. Having these resources will allow our students to get an introduction to some basic strength training exercises that will be incorporated into the class. Our athletic teams will also be able to utilize the resources.

It will also increase student confidence and participation, as more students will have the opportunity to be actively involved during class. In the long term, this project will help students develop healthy habits, understand the importance of physical fitness, and build a strong foundation they can carry into athletics and everyday life.
  • Student Population: This project is designed for students at Westport who participate in physical education classes, with plans to expand into strength and conditioning and studio fitness courses in the coming years. Our student population includes a wide range of ability levels and interests, all working to build a strong foundation in fitness and health.

While newer middle schools have access to updated weight room equipment, including multiple racks and barbells, our program is still developing. We have received some donated barbells and equipment from local high schools, but we currently lack the necessary racks and supporting equipment to use them efficiently and safely. This project will help bridge that gap and provide our students with more equitable access to quality fitness resources.
