BASE students at Fairbanks have had an amazing time going on community outings this year! Their teacher, Jan Foyewa, was awarded a grant that will provide a total of five community outings for the group before the end of this school year. The outings help students to learn social skills while enjoying themselves at the same time. So far, they’ve been on two trips.
One outing was to go bowling. This outing allowed the students to learn sportsmanship, taking turns, teamwork, patience, and generosity. One moment stuck out to Foyewa on this outing, “While bowling, a new student was upset about getting a gutter ball. Another student noticed and let them have their turn. Seeing the kindness extended and the pride shown on their faces was the best part of my day.”
Another outing the students were able to take was to Pythian Castle. There, they learned about behaviors that are appropriate in a public setting, as well as some facts about the city of Springfield.
Students with disabilities, like these in the BASE program at Fairbanks, are an important part of the community! While the students are on these outings, not only do they learn, but the community also learns kindness and compassion from them. These experiences outside the classroom are invaluable and thanks to the grant funds, the students can look forward to other outings like these throughout the year.
