Generous contributions to the FSPS, including key support from partners like OMB Bank, are directly empowering students at Jarrett Middle School. These funds are fostering exciting explorations in both STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and the visual arts. FSPS Board members, SPS School Board VP Judy Bremmer, and representatives from Back-to-School partner OMB Bank recently visited the school to witness the impact of these donor-funded initiatives firsthand.
At the heart of Jarrett’s STEAM program is Mr. Jessey Mook, who leads the school’s Project Lead The Way (PLTW) curriculum. “My primary objective as a PLTW educator is to inspire students and give them a compelling reason to come to school each day,” Mr. Mook shared. His grant provides for items like stethoscopes, 3D printing supplies, and chemistry materials, enhancing his engineering, computer science, and biomedical courses. “These resources are essential in fostering a stimulating and inclusive educational environment,” he added. His dedication was recently recognized nationally as a PLTW Outstanding Gateway Teacher.
The support for Jarrett also significantly enriches the arts through Ms. Adams’ new photography program, a key addition to the STEAM curriculum. Driven by strong student interest, this program is designed to give students hands-on experience, developing creative and technical skills. As Ms. Adams explained in her grant application, photography is a strong multi-disciplinary medium that integrates multiple STEAM elements.
Funding for Ms. Adams’ program will allow for the purchase of essential equipment like batteries, SD cards, backdrops, lighting, and props. This directly benefits eighth-grade students in the photography class and members of the newly revived Photography Club, offering them opportunities for hands-on learning and creative expression.
The impact on students is clear. “I love how photography has impacted my view on art; it’s a very big eye-opener on how much art impacts learning in such positive ways,” shared Yaya Hester, an 8th grader. “Photography gives an amazing view on partnership and it’s a great way to get out of your shell… It’s my favorite class.” The grant, Ms. Adams noted, “would allow us to grow our art education department by providing valuable skills…enriching our STEAM curriculum with a comprehensive photography program.”
