On September 4th, the school year kicked off with a wave of excitement as The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools delivered $205,248 in Back-to-School Grants. Over 60 volunteers spread out across the district, surprising more than 75 educators at 41 schools with funding for innovative projects that will directly enhance student learning.
This incredible day of celebration is the direct result of community investment. “This is what our Back-to-School Grant program is all about: the community invests, we connect those resources, and our kids thrive,” said Natalie Murdock, FSPS Executive Director. “We are deeply grateful to the donors who make these dreams a reality for our teachers and students.”
The awarded grants address critical needs with creative solutions. At York Elementary, where 89% of students are from economically disadvantaged homes, the “Birthday Books” project will provide all 210 students with a new book of their own on their birthday. This initiative fosters a personal connection to reading and helps build home libraries for children who may not have one.
Meanwhile, a grant awarded to McGregor Elementary will tackle a significant math achievement gap. The funding provides crucial hands-on manipulatives and physical tools for the “Bridges Intervention Program,” enabling teachers to deliver targeted, small-group lessons for 230 students in grades 1-5. These resources are essential for building the conceptual understanding and confidence students need to succeed.
While we celebrate these powerful projects, the need across our district remains immense. This year, we received nearly $400,000 in grant applications from passionate educators. The $205,248 we awarded is a tremendous start, but it leaves many deserving projects unfunded.
