BTS Grant: Parkview Special Olympics Fosters Joy, Confidence, and Community

The recent Parkview High School Special Olympics was an inspiring showcase of athleticism, camaraderie, and community spirit, made possible by a FSPS Back-to-School Grant funded by the Be Like Nick Fund.

The Be Like Nick Fund was established in memory of McBride Elementary special education teacher Nick Hostler. Nick was deeply committed to ensuring students with special needs could fully experience life’s joys. The fund, initially inspired by the need for inclusive playground equipment, continues his mission of breaking down barriers.

Parkview High School teachers Jovita Ahrens and Michelle Mitchell, who received the FSPS Back-to-School Grant, envisioned an event where “functional skills students could flourish socially and physically alongside their peers in a welcoming space, free from financial barriers, where families could connect, support their children, and build a stronger community together.”

Thanks to the support of the Be Like Nick Fund, their vision became a vibrant reality. New uniforms and jerseys for all athletes fostered a powerful sense of team identity and belonging, which was incredibly meaningful for students and parents alike. The impact on the student-athletes was heartwarming; strong bonds formed with PHS Cabinet members throughout the year blossomed into genuine camaraderie at the event. Athletes proudly showcased their learned skills, beaming with accomplishment as every participant earned at least one medal, significantly boosting their self-confidence and self-esteem.

Beyond the athletic achievements, the Special Olympics strengthened the wider school community. Parents connected, discussing future social opportunities for their children – a testament to the event’s truly inclusive environment. The grant support elevated the entire PHS Special Olympics by covering essential costs, which freed resources to enhance student and parental involvement, leading to a larger, more celebratory, and deeply inclusive atmosphere.

More than just games, the Parkview High School Special Olympics was a powerful demonstration of the community’s belief in these young athletes. It created lasting memories and fostered an environment where every student could shine, vividly reflecting the inspiring legacy and ongoing mission of Nick Hostler.
