A recent career fair at Weller Elementary School received a special boost from Springfield Public Schools alumni who returned to inspire the next generation. The event connected students from kindergarten through fifth grade with graduates who shared their diverse career and life journeys.
The volunteers provided students with a tangible link between their current education and a future full of possibilities.
Among the guests was Rick McClellan, a 1975 Glendale High School graduate. After retiring, McClellan turned his passion for music into a “fun part-time job” as a solo singer and guitarist, showing students that a career can be found at any stage of life.
Central High School alumna Sheila Pippin (1975) shared her extensive career in music and ministry. As the founder of the Boys Choir of Springfield and a longtime choral director, she highlighted a path dedicated to the arts and community service.
Bringing a more recent perspective was Whitney Phillips, a 2014 graduate of Kickapoo High School, who connected with students as a younger alumna building her career.
Kara Daniels offered a unique story of coming full circle. An SPS graduate herself, she now serves as the Purchasing Manager for the district, demonstrating that students can build impactful careers right here in their hometown.
Former Major League Baseball pitcher Scott Bailes also joined the event. The well-known community leader shared insights from his career as a professional athlete and his subsequent roles in business and civic life.
The alumni answered countless questions, explaining their jobs in kid-friendly terms and sharing photos and handouts. The event was a resounding success, leaving Weller students with new ideas to dream about, all thanks to the inspiring graduates who came back to give back.
