Cityscapes

Cityscapes

  • Description:

In this unit, students will look at cities from antiquity and today and study them by looking at the changes they have made over time to solve their problems, provide infrastructure, planning and zoning, as well as the geography, geology, and biological features. The unit will culminate with the students designing their own cities using the skills and knowledge they gained from their learning experiences.
At the end of the unit, students will be designing cities based on the content, knowledge, and skills they developed pertaining to urban planning and development. Students will showcase their projects for the school and on social media.

  • Need Represented: Off-campus learning experiences are an important element in the learning process. Your gift helps cover the cost of transportation, which makes these experiences possible. Your support will ensure students gain insight into global and local infrastructure. The project meets the needs of students who are learning about the infrastructure, geography, geology, history, governance, and cultural impact on how cities are developed and grow over time. Help our students have the opportunity to experience the infrastructure of a major city!
  • Academic Impact: This grant will offer the students an opportunity to see the workings of their city, understand their contribution to the ecology of Springfield and Southwest Missouri.
  • Student Population: Phelps Center for the Gifted is a program at SPS which supports the needs of exceptional learners, who sometimes have 504's and IEP's because they are considered twice exceptional due to their giftedness as well as ADHD, ADD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
