What is your role in Springfield Public Schools?

I am a elementary vocal music teacher.

How many years have you been with SPS?

I am completing my 34th year at SPS, 33 years have been at Field Elementary School.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time with SPS?

I have so many wonderful memories. I remember many performances that went extremely well.  For example, I will always remember one specific Holiday performance in which the audience reacted with a collective “wow” after Singing Sensations successfully completed a very difficult piece of music. My mind also comes to  specific students that inspired me with their growth and talent. I will always remember one student that tried and tried to match pitch in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade and was unable to do so. Finally, in fourth grade, it “clicked” and he was able to match pitch…even to the point he made all-city Honor Choir the next year. There are so many wonderful memories…it is almost impossible to narrow it down to just one favorite memory.”

What is something you will miss about SPS?

I will miss the students, the comradery of a wonderful staff that I work with, and watching my students perform. I will miss the moments in the classroom when music “happens”.

Is there any advice that you would like to share to those that are not retiring this year?

Remember that teaching is a journey, it’s a wonderful career. It has ups and downs. Keep striving to be your best and students will come along with you. There is no greater reward than when a student succeeds.
