The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools is proud to feature board member Dr. Laurie Edmondson, Distinguished Professor of Education at Drury University. A Parkview High School graduate herself, her connection to the district is deeply personal; an incredible five generations of her family are graduates of Springfield Public Schools.
This lifelong connection inspired her professional path. Dr. Edmondson credits her own encouraging educators for motivating her to pursue a career in education. She fondly remembers many who believed in her, from a kind third-grade teacher who made learning history hands-on, to an engaging French teacher who sparked such a passion that Dr. Edmondson eventually student-taught the language. These positive experiences cemented her belief in the power of great teaching.
After serving for 11 years as an SPS teacher herself, she transitioned to shaping the next generation of educators at Drury University, a role she has cherished for 22 years. Driven by a desire to continue supporting classrooms directly, she joined the Foundation’s board. A favorite memory highlights this passion: having the joy of delivering a Back to School grant to one of her own former students.
Her commitment to service is a cornerstone of her life, and through her dedicated work, she helps the Foundation achieve its vision of a thriving SPS where every student can succeed.
“The Foundation provides opportunities for students and teachers that wouldn’t be possible without the investment of engaged community members… All of this can be life changing for students and inspire them to do more and create a brighter future for themselves.”
