Yoga in the Classroom

Progress:
  • Project Cost: $910
  • Funded to Date: $25
  • Teacher Name: Jayme L Carabello
  • School: Mann Elementary
  • Grade Level: 3
  • Description:

To help curtail disciplinary issues in our school, we have adopted conscious discipline to promote self regulation and mindfulness. Yoga teaches students to become aware of their breath, establish balance, stretch their mind and bodies, and develop empathy for others while respecting themselves. These two practices marry well together and will help students better manage their bodies, emotions, and thoughts.

Namaste (The light and love in me honors, respects, and loves the light and love in you. When you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, we are truly… one).

  • Planned Use for Funds: At the beginning of each week, I teach my students a new strategy for being mindful- a meditation or yoga move. We currently do our "Mindful Monday" practices in the small carpet area of my classroom. If we had yoga mats and blocks, we would be able to have more flexibility with where and when we can practice learning techniques for being more mindful. We also use conscience discipline and yoga throughout the week as needed. Our yoga mats can also serve as safe spots.
  • Need Represented: This request is an effort to help curtail disciplinary issues in our school. We have adopted conscience discipline to promote self regulation and mindfulness. Yoga teaches students to become aware of their breath, establish balance, stretch their mind and bodies, and develop empathy for others while respecting themselves. These two practices marry well together and will help students better manage their bodies, emotions, and thoughts.
Also, many of my students would not be able to afford a yoga mat of their own and this project would afford them this
  • Academic Impact: When students can better self-regulate their bodies, emotions, and thoughts they can spend more time in the classroom and less time having someone else help them manage their behavior.
These strategies also help students deal with stress related to testing and other academic endeavors.
  • Student Population: Our school is on the Federal Title I register and serves a very diverse group of kids. Our classroom is diverse racially, socioeconomically, culturally, and has varying ability levels. We work together to create a behavior and culturally proficient setting that all students will thrive in.
