Using Technology to Increase Engagement in Science

    The MoticamX3 is a microscope camera that will wirelessly project the microscopic images to my computer, which can then be projected onto the SMART board for students to see. Teaching 7th grade life science, a large majority of the content we discuss is in cells. It is important that students be able to see the structures so that they can better understand these concepts. This is often times very difficult and time consuming for students, as they must be taught how to use the microscope before we can actually use it as a tool for conceptual learning. This takes away from valuable instructional time. By projecting just one image on the board, I can use the time for more functional learning for all students without needed to devote so much time on the workings of the actual piece of equipment. This tool would help me to maximize student engagement and understanding.

  • Need Represented: Pipkin has limited access to technology for learning as compared to similar schools across the country. Students are missing out on valuable STEM experiences that could really enrich their learning and engagement in school.
  • Academic Impact: Pipkin is a comprehensive school, and our student body is comprised of mostly under privileged students that are free-reduced lunch eligible. As is typical with these demographics, we struggle with student engagement, apathy, and a lack of motivation for learning. By helping students to see what is inside cells and what is happening, the Moticam will help to increase engagement, thereby increasing motivation to learn and ultimately student outcomes.
    The equipment purchased with this grant will serve primarily 7th grade science students, with the ability to efficiently move and use the equipment into any other classrooms should other teachers want to do so. There are approximately 200 7th grade students at Pipkin Middle School.
