Innovative Designs for Science

Innovative Designs for Science

  • Description:

This grant would be used to purchase two 3D printers and supplies for Phelps – one for use at the WINGS program and one for use at the Scholars program (housed at Central). Our current 3D printers have become obsolete, as there is no longer software made to support them.
Lessons have been developed over the years in both programs to utilize the engineering design process with students to design 3D objects related to specific course objectives.
Students at WINGS are enrolled in major unit areas of study which utilize 3D printing in their lessons. One example is the Robotics Ocean Missions course that creates animal designs based on adaptations for the ocean floor.
Students at Scholars utilize 3D printers during specific lessons on engineering design. They are also used to support our Robotics Team, Science Olympiad Team, Makerspace Club, and Science Fair Projects. This year we had multiple individual projects utilizing 3D design for different tasks.

  • Need Represented: Our current 3D printers are no longer useable as they are no longer software supported. Lessons have been developed over the years in both programs to utilize the engineering design process with students to design 3D objects related to specific course objectives.
  • Academic Impact: Students at WINGS are enrolled in major unit areas of study which utilize 3D printing in their lessons.

    Student Objectives include:
Educating students about the components of a 3D printer, how to operate a 3D printer, preparing & making files to print and designing objects to be printed using the engineering design process.
Developing creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills to prepare them for the future of work and society.
Evaluating project constraints and design a solution to meet specific needs.
  • Student Population: WINGS is a 1st-8th one-day-pull-out program designed to provide enrichment for gifted students with 775 students from across the district enrolled in the program housed at Phelps.
Scholars is a full-time gifted program for students in 6th-8th grade with 130 students from across the district, housed at Central High School.
