- Description:
This grant is being requested for the Intensive Support Disabilities classes (functional skills/multiple disabilities) at Kickapoo High School. This grant will help with sending students on an average of one community outing per month. Each community outing will focus on community integration skills, social skills, extending learning outside of the classroom, experiential learning and more. These community outings will tie in directly with the Unique Learning System curriculum that is used in our classrooms. We will either be focusing on the academic section of the curriculum or the social and community section of the curriculum depending on what month it is and where we are going. Overall the needs that this grant will cover are more than just the dollar amount attached; it will significantly impact student growth and achievement.
- Need Represented: These community outings will tie in directly with the Unique Learning System curriculum that is used in our classrooms. We will either be focusing on the academic section of the curriculum or the social and community section of the curriculum depending on what month it is and where we are going. Overall the needs that this grant will cover are more than just the dollar amount attached; it will significantly impact student growth and achievement.
- Academic Impact: The community outings that have been chosen line up with the curriculum that is used in the classroom and will help students better understand the depth of the topic that is being learned. For example, when we go to the History Museum on the Square we will be focusing on the history of our community and country, while when we go to Andy B’s we will be focusing on the social and behavioral aspect of the trip. Community outings are engaging, relevant, and personal because they show students many aspects of life that we aren't able to really show or teach in a classroom. They allow us to bring the teaching to life for the students.
- Student Population: The students in the Intensive Support classrooms are students that are on an alternative curriculum and spend the day in the same classroom with the exception of once per day when classes are combined due to teacher conferences. These students work on basic living skills, community integration skills, and more while in the classroom.
