- Description:
Cooperative board games are exactly what they sound like. Instead of competing against each other, students work together to “win” against the game. In our classroom we love our apple orchard cooperative board game. Students have so much fun playing the game that they don’t even realize they are practicing taking turns, waiting, communicating with friends, and fine motor skills. I would love to add more cooperative board games into other units this year because the kids love them and learn so much!
- Need Represented: Cooperative games are not a part of our curriculum, but they are fantastic tool for teaching so many of our social emotional standards. They are highly engaging and kids love them, but along the way they are mastering their pre-k goals. The cooperative games on this list directly tie to pre-k standards for fine motor skills, self-control, taking turns, problem-solving, counting, colors, maintaining focused attention.
- Academic Impact: My students are working on getting ready for kindergarten. When we play cooperative board games like these during center time, students are gaining the social emotional skills they need to be successful kindergarteners in our elementary schools.
- Student Population: These games will be used with 18 pre-k students at Fulbright Early Childhood Center. Some receive free or reduced lunch, speech services, special education services, and occupational therapy. They will all be SPS kindergarteners next year.
