Book Buddies

  • Description:

    The funds will be used to purchase small toy dinosaurs, small toy penguins, small toy snowmen, and small toy ducks. These will be used as “Book Buddies”. Students in PreK – 2nd will have the opportunity to “adopt” one of the toys to become their “Book Buddy”. If they adopt a toy, they have to agree to read to it or with it for 20 minutes a day to care for the toy. Students will also get a reading log to keep track of the reading. Students who read to their “Book Buddy” for 400 minutes, can bring their reading log to the library to receive a small prize. They also get to keep their “Book Buddy”. Students will have to opportunity to adopt a toy dinosaur during the month of November when there is a month-long celebration of dinosaurs in the library to celebrate “Dinovember”. The penguins and dinosaurs can be adopted during the winter months. Lastly, the ducks can be adopted during the spring months.

  • Need Represented: This project will help promote independent reading among younger students.
  • Academic Impact: This project will encourage students to read independently. Students will read for fun on their own and ideally create a habit of reading daily. Daily reading helps students grow as a student and make academic gains.
  • Student Population: Students are in preschool through second grade. The population is diverse with students which include English Language Learners and students of various socio-economic backgrounds.
