- Description:
I am requesting funds to purchase books that come with an audio component. The purpose is to reach reluctant readers who struggle to read on grade-level by providing a variety of books that are age appropriate. Students can follow the text as they listen to the audio.
- Need Represented: Many students who read below grade level become reluctant readers because they are not able to read the same books as their classmates. By providing both text and audio, students will be able to check out some of the same titles as their peers. They can enjoy stories that are more appropriate for their age level, rather than on their independent reading level. Thus, they will experience more engaging stories and build and enjoyment of reading that will motivate them to further develop their literacy skills.
- Academic Impact: Research from the American Association of School Librarians has shown that following along with an audiobook increases comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. It also fosters enjoyment for reading. The titles purchased will be housed in our school library for students to checkout. This will increase the number of students scoring Proficient and Advanced on benchmark assessments.
- Student Population: Field Elementary is located in southeast Springfield. The population is approximately 400 students. 21% of the student's receive Free and Reduced Lunch assistance. 7% of students attending Field are English Language Learners.
