Our students will be re-entering the school in full-force soon! Many will have fears, and I want them to feel comfortable and safe. I would like to furnish my room with new desks designed for student comfort and safety (all durable plastic surfaces for easy sanitizing). These desks will increase student engagement and foster active learning as they are on casters. The desks allow students to swivel and move–which helps with those that like to fidget–and allows for effortless reconfigurations to meet the needs of the day’s lessons. These desks LITERALLY conform to the needs of the students and fit all shapes and body sizes. Finally, research shows that more intentionally designed classrooms are positively correlated to student engagement, which amplifies student success. Check out the attached picture!
- Need Represented: Students can't learn if they don't feel safe and comfortable. Our brains are built to focus on safety and comfort before higher order executive processes can take place.
- Academic Impact: When students feel safe and comfortable, they are better able to focus and learn. I expect student engagement, performance, and even attendance to increase as the culture and climate or our room will be elevated by these new, *special* desks.
- Student Population: I teach 8 classes at Glendale high school, and my students are all freshmen.
