Deep within the historic halls of Central High School, a new legacy is being built—one of circuits, code, and collaboration. The Central Robotics team is more than just a club; it’s a launchpad for the next generation of STEAM leaders, and it’s being powered by the generosity of donors just like you.
Through a “Robotics for the Future” grant from the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools, these students are gaining experiences that transcend the classroom. Donor support funded the team’s participation in the highly competitive FIRST Tech Challenge, covering essential registration fees, equipment, and transportation. For a team with big ambitions, this support was critical. “We had two teams register and we found out our team was slotted to go to Rolla, Missouri twice,” shared team sponsor Aiden Martin. “Without the grant, we wouldn’t have been able to make those trips.” Your support removed the financial uncertainty, allowing students to focus on problem-solving, teamwork, and the thrill of competition.
The impact of your gift extends far beyond the robotics workshop. The Central students have become mentors, sharing their passion with the wider community. They’ve visited Boyd and Field elementaries, allowing younger students to build amazing pieces of art with robotics parts and excitedly drive a fully-built robot around an obstacle course. These moments spark curiosity and plant the seeds for a lifelong love of learning and discovery.
For many students at Central, where over half the student body comes from low-income households, programs like this are a critical bridge to future success. A student shared, “I had all these skills from my classes, but I couldn’t find a place to really apply them and didn’t have the resources to experiment on my own. Robotics gave me the hands-on experience I couldn’t get from schoolwork and a team where I had the freedom to try things but also the support I needed. It’s the program that broke down the barriers in front of me and helped me figure out my goals.” The robotics team creates a nurturing environment where students can learn from mistakes, develop professional skills, and see a clear path to a career in a high-demand field.
